More than 30 participants in the National Trust for Historic Preservation Conference received a brief history lesson from ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½×îаæÏÂÔØ University students Kole Torres and Danielle Bradley on November 17 in Lockport. The students presented a “pop-up” exhibit created from material in the , which collects materials related to the I & M Canal and its communities.
The pop-up exhibit was part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Conference’s field study trip to the Gaylord Building in Lockport, entitled “Learning in Lockport: The Gaylord Building and I&M Canal.”
Pamela Owens, Gaylord Building site director, said “We are so happy to welcome these visitors. They learned about how the United States Congress designated the first National Heritage Corridor in 1984 to protect the I&M Canal’s remnants and highlight the canal’s enormous impact on our nation’s development.”
As the I&M Canal’s headquarters, Lockport played a central role in the development of Chicago and the region. Jerry Adelman, president and CEO of Openlands, delivered a dynamic illustrated presentation after lunch. He addressed the public-private efforts to conserve historic, natural, and cultural resources in the area.
