ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½×îаæÏÂÔØ University received the 2012 Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Volunteer Award. The honor is for the service of ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½×îаæÏÂÔØ University students on several projects, including and students helping out at Midewin National Public Lands Day, interns assisting in the summer months, and other year-round projects, such as planting, cleaning seeds and removing invasive species.

“Students are usually hesitant to volunteer at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. They think that it will be hard labor and no fun. Their attitude changes after helping out on National Public Lands Day. They come to realize the amount of work that needs to be done to restore a prairie. They have fun planting, collecting seeds, and removing invasive species with their friends. They also enjoy learning from the experienced staff about native plants and the work done at Midewin,”commented Dr. Jerry Kavouras, director of Environmental Science and associate professor of biology.

ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½×îаæÏÂÔØ University environmental science majors that recently served in summer internships at Midewin include: Samantha Payne (current), Alicia Dyner ’10, Corey Anco ’09, Amy Dombrowski ’09 and Daniel Anco ’07.
