ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½×îаæÏÂÔØ University students travel and study in Italy

ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½×îаæÏÂÔØ University students traveled May 11- 21to Rome, Assisi and Florence. The 15 students enrolled in Dr. Dominic Colonna’s Faith and the Arts course or Dr. Dennis H. Cremin’s history courses. “This year’s students really enjoyed the Coliseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the city of Assisi itself,” Cremin, professor of and director of the , said.

Colonna, professor of , noted the interdisciplinary nature of the trip. “This year we had students from nursing, business, air traffic control, education, biology, math, and computer science. This represents the interdisciplinary nature of ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½×îаæÏÂÔØ University’s general education curriculum.”

Cremin added, “Dominic draws so well on the education of the students. He asked the five nursing students their reaction to Michelangelo’s David. They provided their observations. One said that he seemed too thin. Another added that he has a sunken chest, and his neck appeared constricted. From their observation, they suggested that he seemed to exhibit signs of extreme anxiety. The nurses suggested that Michelangelo captured many of the physical features that one might have facing a Goliath. It was a great moment in the class.”

Another highlight included a tour of the chapel at the Christian Brothers’ Generalate, the Christian Brother’s headquarters in Rome. Brother Thomas Johnson, FSC, vicar general of the Christian Brothers, was generous with his time and led the tour.

Interestingly, there was a connection with Brother Johnson and trip participant Tom Dinon. The International Business student traveled across the globe to meet his family’s former teacher. Dinon explained, “My father and two of my uncles went to De La Salle High School in Chicago, where he used to teach. He remembered my uncles well.”

Students attending this year’s Italy Travel Study trip included Jessica Albano, Lillian Colonna, Steven Craig, Thomas Dinon, Caitlin Feigenbaum, Dennis Gray, Rebecca Kalnicky, Alex Lopez, Theresa Malanao, Ivette Manzo, Janet Morioka, Margaret Plese, Penelope Strid, Danielle Volk and Kellie Yonkers.
