For the fifth consecutive year, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½×îаæÏÂÔØ University has been named a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its continuous commitment to effective community forestry and environmental responsibility.
Brother James Gaffney, FSC, President of ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½×îаæÏÂÔØ University, praised those involved in initiatives to maintain a sustainable and beautiful campus. “The Groundskeeping staff, led by Dwight DeVries, is to be commended for its fine success in landscaping, careful implementation of sound environmental practices and resourcefulness in using native plants and trees in landscaping,” he said. “Multiple varieties of trees now beautify the campus, including spectacular flowering species, stately evergreens, traditional long-lived trees, and some selected for size or color. Thoughtful stewardship has been demonstrated in providing a breathtaking and sustainable environment for our students, faculty, staff, alumni and many campus visitors.”
ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½×îаæÏÂÔØ University achieved the designation as a Tree Campus USA once again by meeting the required five core standards for sustainable campus forestry: sponsoring a Tree Advisory Committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.
Tree Campus USA, a national program launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation, honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation. Tree Campus USA is supported by a generous grant from Toyota.
